Putri Aisyiyah Orphanage in North Balikpapan faces challenges in catfish farming due to low water pH levels which lead to increase fish mortality and reduce production. This issue was chosen because it directly relates to the orphanage’s effort toward food self-sufficiency. The Community Service team addressed the problem through the construction of pond roof covers to maintain water quality, installation of aerators to improve oxygen levels, and the stocking of 300 catfish fingerlings in three ponds. Although 50 fish died during adaptation, water stability improved, with pH rising from 5 to 6–7, resulting in better survival rates. Technical training on pond maintenance and feeding was provided to caretakers and residents, increasing their knowledge from 40% to 75%. The program also included four weeks of tutoring sessions to support academic achievement for the children of the orphanage, though learning outcomes could not be evaluated due to limited time. Challenges included restricted storage space for construction materials and difficulty accessing supplies during holidays, slightly affecting administration. In conclusion, the program successfully improved fish farming practices and empowered residents, showing potential to support sustainable food self-sufficiency and strengthen the independence of the orphanage’s children.
