Abstract

Designed as a civic-engagement initiative, the project empowers residents living near Manggar’s municipal waste facility in Balikpapan to convert household refuse into energy-dense RDF pellets an unconventional solid fuel manufactured directly from urban trash. The main problem faced by the community is the increasing volume of household waste and the lack of knowledge regarding its potential as an energy resource. Through training sessions and technical assistance, participants were introduced to renewable energy concepts based on waste utilization, material segregation techniques, shredding, drying, and RDF pellet production using simple equipment. The methods used included socialization, process demonstrations, and hands-on practice. The results showed an 85% increase in participants’ knowledge and skills based on pre-test and post-test evaluations, as well as the establishment of a trained community group capable of independently producing RDF pellets with an average calorific value of 4,000–5,000 kcal/kg. This program contributed positively to waste reduction, environmental awareness improvement, and the development of a circular economy model based on clean energy within the TPAS Manggar area.
