Raising awareness of slope hazards and implementing energy-friendly lighting in the commercial building of Bukit Batakan Permai II, Manggar Campus, East Balikpapan
Abstract
Bukit Batakan Permai II, located in Manggar Sub-district, East Balikpapan, lies on hilly terrain with potential landslide hazards. Limited community knowledge of slope risks tends to increase disaster vulnerability. On the other hand, local lighting demand remains high but still relies on conventional electricity, which is less efficient. This community engagement project aims to enhance residents’ awareness of slope hazards through outreach and simple mitigation practices, as well as to introduce energy-efficient lighting systems based on LED and solar panels. The implementation stages consisted of field surveys, educational activities, community mentoring, and the installation of pilot solar-powered lighting units. The outcomes indicate an improvement in residents’ understanding of slope hazards and mitigation strategies, along with the successful use of solar-based lighting that contributes to electricity savings and neighborhood safetyDownloads
