Community Empowerment Through Compost Production from Household Waste: A Case Study in Kampung Nelayan Berdasi, Balikpapan
Abstract
Household organic waste management is still a challenge in Kampung Nelayan Berdasi RT 03, Balikpapan City. A community empowerment program through the utilization of household waste into compost fertilizer was implemented with a participatory approach for four months. The activities include initial surveys, counseling, practical composting training, and evaluation and mentoring. The results showed an increase in the knowledge and skills of residents, especially housewives, in processing organic waste into ready-to-use compost. The compost produced has a fine texture and dark brown color, indicating that the decomposition process is optimal. The program proved effective in reducing waste volume, improving soil fertility, and strengthening food security and community self-reliance
