Implementation and Education of an Integrated Rainwater Harvesting System with Water Quality Treatment for Clean Water Availability in Bukit Batakan Permai II Residential Area, Manggar, Balikpapan City
Abstract
The limited availability of clean water in residential areas remains a significant issue that requires innovative water management solutions. Bukit Batakan Permai II Housing in Balikpapan City has high rainfall potential, making it suitable for implementing a rainwater harvesting (RWH) system. This program aims to apply an integrated RWH system with simple filtration and provide community education on system operation and maintenance. The implementation involved site surveys, design and installation of rainwater storage and filtration units, and community outreach. Test results showed that the rainwater pH decreased from 7.85 to 7.64, and TDS slightly decreased from 0.162 to 0.161, indicating improved water quality with more neutral characteristics. Educational activities enhanced public understanding, with 97.3% of respondents recognizing the function of RWH systems and 70.3% aware of the importance of filtration. This program effectively improved access to clean water and raised community awareness of sustainable water management in residential areas.
