Abstract

The Community Service program in RT. 43, Karang Joang Village, North Balikpapan, focuses on addressing the critical issue of clean water quality, which is an essential aspect for the community. The area faces problems with well water that is unsuitable for use due to its odor, turbidity, and the presence of oil layers, all of which negatively impact residents' health and economy and reduce the productivity of small businesses. The Community Service team designed the installation of a simple filtration system using biofilters or activated carbon to remove contaminant particles, making the water clearer and safer. The program also includes education on plants that can help maintain water quality. Activities include initial surveys and data collection, community outreach to local leaders, and the assembly of the filtration system, which involves community members as part of hands-on learning. The Community Service team will teach standards for water quality, the benefits of biofilters, how to maintain the filters, and how to plant water-purifying plants.
