This research was conducted in RT 45, Karang Joang Sub-district, North Balikpapan, to address the problem of open waste burning by residents due to the unavailability of Temporary Waste Collection Sites (TPS) around residential areas. Open waste burning causes air pollution that potentially endangers the health of surrounding communities. To reduce these impacts, a waste burning device equipped with a lime-based wet scrubber system (Ca(OH)₂) was developed to capture harmful particles from waste burning smoke. The work stages included: preparation, device fabrication, and final stage. Test results showed that the device successfully reduced the amount of smoke particles, although small leaks were still found in some joints. The water from the smoke washing process changed color to black due to chemical reactions during the process. Additionally, educational efforts regarding the 3R principles and provision of waste bins were also carried out to support better waste management. These findings open opportunities for developing burning devices with wet scrubber filtration systems as a simple solution to reduce household-scale smoke pollution in residential environments.
