This community service program aimed to empower residents of RT. 20, Batu Ampar Subdistrict, Balikpapan City, through the application of aquaponic technology as an integrated cultivation system combining fish and plants in densely populated areas. Aquaponics was chosen because it integrates aquaculture and hydroponics in a mutually beneficial, land-efficient, and environmentally friendly ecosystem. The implementation included socialization of aquaponic principles, hands-on training to assemble the system using simple materials such as drums and PVC pipes, and practical activities of cultivating water spinach and tilapia fish. Evaluation was carried out using pre-test and post-test questionnaires consisting of ten questions covering understanding of principles, benefits, effectiveness, and ease of use of the aquaponic system. The results showed a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge and awareness, with average scores increasing from 48% (pre-test) to 93% (post-test), representing a 45% improvement. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the interconnection between hydroponics and aquaculture, as well as the potential of aquaponics to support household food security. In addition to producing efficient cultivation outcomes, this program successfully enhanced community awareness of sustainable agriculture and is expected to serve as a replicable empowerment model for other densely populated urban areas.
